description

A first person adventure game about Emily and her (quite) extraordinary life. Metanoia tells a story about DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) which has been created in collaboration with two experts on the subject. They adviced us on the do and don'ts, and helped us create an experience that the DID community gladly uses to explain their disorder to their loved ones.

  • Rutger Oudenampsen: 2D Concept Artist, UI Artist, Project Lead
  • Mistrea Tromp: Narrative Designer, UX Designer, Researcher

process

Metanoia was the first game I made in Unity, with a team of 4 artists and an interaction designer. This made it so that I suddenly became the lead developer (with no C# knowledge) so I learned a lot. Not only did I make the levels, I also created the cutscenes and gameplay loop. It's still pretty buggy however: I plan on one day polishing it and re-releasing it.

We used a survey to ask the DID community what they would like to see in the game. We asked if they had any stories they wanted to share, and what to avoid entirely in the game. We got a bunch of responses with advice and experiences we were able to use (anonymously, of course). Our experts both have diagnosed DID, and were able to help us to avoid the game being stereotypical or have a negative narrative (which was being pushed by Hollywood in certain horror movies). Currently the community still considers the game a good representation of DID, which we are very proud of!
